Preparation of steel substrates before application of paints and related products — Surface preparation methods — Part 1: General principles

WHAT DOES THIS STANDARD COVER?

ISO 8504-1 provides general principles for selecting methods for preparation of steel surfaces before application of paints and related products. It forms part of the ISO 8504 series dealing with surface-preparation methods and provides a framework for considering the condition of the steel, the required prepared surface and the preparation method to be used.

WHY IS IT RELEVANT?

Surface preparation is fundamental to protective coating performance. ISO 8504-1 is relevant when considering how an existing steel surface should be prepared before coating and reinforces the principle that the selected preparation method needs to be appropriate for the required surface condition and subsequent coating system. This is particularly relevant when alternative preparation technologies such as laser cleaning are proposed in place of methods originally specified for a project. The preparation method should not be accepted simply because it removes the existing coating; the resulting surface still needs to satisfy the applicable coating and project requirements.

KEY INSPECTION CONSIDERATIONS

ISO 8504-1 provides general principles for selecting methods of preparing steel surfaces before application of paints and related products. Selection of a preparation method should consider the existing surface condition, coating or contamination to be removed, required final surface condition, accessibility, environmental constraints and the requirements of the proposed coating system. The preparation method and the required resulting surface condition are related but should not be treated as the same thing. Inspection should focus on whether the prepared surface meets the specified requirements rather than assuming that use of a particular preparation process automatically demonstrates compliance.

WHAT THE STANDARD SHOULD NOT BE USED TO ASSUME

ISO 8504-1 does not mean that one surface-preparation method is universally appropriate for every steel structure or coating system. Selection of a preparation method should take account of project-specific requirements and constraints. Using a specified preparation method does not by itself demonstrate achievement of a specified visual cleanliness grade, surface profile or contamination level. Those characteristics should be assessed separately where required.

PRACTICAL INSPECTION APPLICATION

ISO 8504-1 is relevant when reviewing surface-preparation specifications, method statements and inspection plans before work begins. During inspection, the selected preparation process should be considered alongside the required final surface condition. The inspector may need to assess visual cleanliness, surface profile, dust, soluble contamination and environmental conditions separately depending on the requirements of the project and coating system.
