WHAT DOES THIS STANDARD COVER?

ISO 8501-1 provides recognised rust grades and visual preparation grades for steel surfaces before application of paints and related products. It includes preparation grades associated with abrasive blast-cleaning and other specified preparation methods and provides internationally recognised visual references for assessment of prepared steel.

WHY IS IT RELEVANT?

ISO 8501-1 is widely relevant to protective coating inspection because the visual condition of prepared steel is an important part of determining whether the surface is ready for coating. The required preparation grade should be established by the project specification and coating requirements. Visual assessment should also be distinguished from other surface characteristics such as soluble salt contamination and surface profile, which require separate consideration where applicable. For laser cleaning specifically, the familiar Sa preparation grades should not automatically be assigned to a laser-cleaned surface simply because its appearance resembles blast-cleaned steel.

KEY INSPECTION CONSIDERATIONS

ISO 8501-1 is used for visual assessment of rust grades and preparation grades of uncoated steel substrates and steel substrates after overall removal of previous coatings. Inspection is based on visual comparison of the prepared steel surface with the relevant preparation-grade requirements and reference appearance. Assessment should be carried out on the actual prepared surface under suitable viewing conditions. Surface cleanliness and surface profile are separate characteristics. Achieving a visual preparation grade does not establish the surface-profile amplitude and does not demonstrate that soluble salts, dust or other non-visible contamination are within project requirements.

WHAT THE STANDARD SHOULD NOT BE USED TO ASSUME

A surface described as Sa 2½ should not automatically be assumed to have an acceptable surface profile. ISO 8501-1 primarily addresses visual surface preparation condition. It does not replace separate assessment of surface profile, soluble salts, dust or other contamination where those characteristics are specified. A preparation method does not automatically achieve a particular ISO 8501-1 grade. The resulting surface must be inspected and assessed. This applies regardless of whether preparation is achieved by conventional abrasive blasting or another preparation technology.

PRACTICAL INSPECTION APPLICATION

Inspectors commonly use ISO 8501-1 when assessing abrasive blast-cleaned steel before application of protective coatings. The inspector should assess whether the resulting visible surface condition meets the specified preparation grade and record areas that do not comply. Other specified surface-condition requirements, including surface profile, soluble salts, dust and environmental conditions, should be assessed separately using the applicable inspection methods and standards.

STATUS AND SOURCE VERIFICATION

ISO 8501-1:2007 verified against the official ISO catalogue in September 2026 as the current published edition. ISO is developing a replacement edition, but that developing edition has not yet replaced the 2007 published standard.
