TECHNICAL STANDARD
ISO 12944-8
Paints and varnishes — Corrosion protection of steel structures by protective paint systems — Part 8: Development of specifications for new work and maintenance
ISO
Edition 2 / 2017
Current
WHAT DOES THIS STANDARD COVER?
Provides guidance for developing protective coating specifications for new work and maintenance of steel structures.
WHY IS IT RELEVANT?
Particularly relevant to PIL’s specification review and technical consultancy work, including development or review of requirements for surface preparation, coating work, inspection and maintenance.
KEY INSPECTION CONSIDERATIONS
The standard addresses development of specifications for protective coating work on new construction and maintenance. A useful specification should define the asset and exposure, surface preparation, coating system, application requirements, inspection and acceptance requirements. For maintenance work, the condition and nature of the existing coating system are important inputs. Inspection requirements should be sufficiently defined to allow objective assessment of compliance.
WHAT THE STANDARD SHOULD NOT BE USED TO ASSUME
Generic references to standards do not necessarily provide all project-specific requirements. Referencing a test method does not by itself establish an acceptance criterion. Existing coatings should not automatically be assumed suitable for overcoating. Ambiguous requirements should be clarified before work proceeds.
PRACTICAL INSPECTION APPLICATION
The standard is relevant during coating specification and inspection and test plan review. Inspection requirements should establish what is to be inspected, the applicable method, frequency, acceptance requirement, responsible party and required record. Pre-condition surveys and supporting testing can provide important information for maintenance specifications.

RELATED PIL GUIDANCE
A pre-condition coating survey brings visual inspection, testing, sampling and access planning together to support evidence-based maintenance decisions.
Laser cleaning can remove coatings and corrosion, but the resulting surface must still be inspected and verified against the proposed coating system and project requirements.
