Paints and varnishes — Corrosion protection of steel structures by protective paint systems — Part 1: General introduction

WHAT DOES THIS STANDARD COVER?

Provides the general introduction and overall scope for the ISO 12944 series covering corrosion protection of steel structures by protective paint systems.

WHY IS IT RELEVANT?

Useful as the starting point for understanding how the different parts of ISO 12944 work together when specifying, inspecting or assessing protective coating systems.

KEY INSPECTION CONSIDERATIONS

ISO 12944-1 provides the general introduction and overall framework for the ISO 12944 series dealing with corrosion protection of steel structures by protective paint systems. It establishes the context for using the different parts of the ISO 12944 series together rather than treating an individual part as a complete coating specification. Important considerations include the environment in which the structure will operate, expected durability, design and surface condition, surface preparation, coating-system selection, application, inspection and maintenance. Durability should be understood as a technical planning concept rather than a guaranteed coating-system service life.

WHAT THE STANDARD SHOULD NOT BE USED TO ASSUME

ISO 12944-1 should not be treated as a standalone protective coating specification. The requirements relevant to an individual project may involve several parts of ISO 12944 together with the project specification, coating manufacturer requirements and other applicable standards. A durability range should not automatically be interpreted as a warranty period or guaranteed time to first maintenance. Compliance with one aspect of the ISO 12944 framework does not demonstrate compliance with all requirements applicable to the coating system.

PRACTICAL INSPECTION APPLICATION

ISO 12944-1 is useful when reviewing the overall technical basis of a protective coating project. Inspectors can use the framework to understand how environmental classification, coating-system selection, surface preparation, application and inspection requirements relate to one another. During specification and ITP review, the inspector should identify which parts of ISO 12944 are applicable and ensure that project-specific requirements and acceptance criteria are clearly defined.
