Paints and varnishes — Corrosion protection of steel structures by protective paint systems — Part 2: Classification of environments
ISO
Edition 2 / 2017
Current
WHAT DOES THIS STANDARD COVER?
Addresses classification of the principal environments to which steel structures are exposed and the corrosivity associated with those environments.
WHY IS IT RELEVANT?
Environmental classification is an important input when developing or reviewing protective coating specifications and considering the demands placed on a coating system. Do not imply that environment classification alone determines the correct coating system.
KEY INSPECTION CONSIDERATIONS
ISO 12944-2 deals with classification of the principal environments to which steel structures are exposed and the corrosivity associated with those environments. Environmental classification is an important input into the selection and specification of a suitable protective coating system. The standard addresses atmospheric environments as well as categories associated with structures immersed in water or buried in soil. The actual exposure of the structure should be considered rather than selecting a corrosivity category solely from a general description of the geographical location.
WHAT THE STANDARD SHOULD NOT BE USED TO ASSUME
A corrosivity category is not a direct measurement of coating condition and does not by itself specify a complete protective coating system. Structures at the same site can experience different exposure conditions because of shelter, condensation, orientation, local contamination, immersion, splash, temperature or other micro-environmental effects. Environmental classification should therefore not be treated as a substitute for understanding the actual service conditions of the asset. The selected protective coating system must also consider the other applicable project and coating-system requirements.
PRACTICAL INSPECTION APPLICATION
ISO 12944-2 is particularly relevant during coating specification review, maintenance planning and assessment of whether the proposed protective coating system is appropriate for the intended environment. Inspectors and coating consultants should confirm the environmental classification used by the specification and consider whether the actual exposure conditions observed on the structure are consistent with that classification. Where local conditions are significantly more severe than the general environment, this should be identified during technical review.
