WHAT DOES THIS STANDARD COVER?

Covers use of a stylus instrument for calibration of ISO surface-profile comparators and determination of blast-cleaned steel surface profile.

WHY IS IT RELEVANT?

Relevant where an inspector uses instrument-based profile measurement rather than, or alongside, comparator or replica-tape methods. Do not confuse measured profile with ISO 19840 correction values.

KEY INSPECTION CONSIDERATIONS

ISO 8503-4 describes a stylus-instrument procedure associated with ISO surface-profile comparators and the determination of surface profile on blast-cleaned steel. The method can provide a quantitative assessment of surface profile rather than the comparative grading obtained using an ISO surface-profile comparator. The standard is applicable to essentially planar blast-cleaned steel within the measurement range applicable to the method. Instrument condition, measurement location, substrate geometry and representative sampling should be considered when obtaining and interpreting results.

WHAT THE STANDARD SHOULD NOT BE USED TO ASSUME

A stylus surface-profile measurement should not be confused with visual surface cleanliness. It should also not be confused with the surface-roughness correction applied when interpreting DFT measurements under ISO 19840. A numerical profile result does not establish whether the profile is acceptable for a particular coating system unless an applicable requirement has been specified. The suitability of the measurement method should also be considered where surface geometry or accessibility may affect reliable measurement.

PRACTICAL INSPECTION APPLICATION

ISO 8503-4 may be used where a quantitative determination of blast-cleaned steel surface profile is required. Inspectors should take measurements at representative locations and record the resulting profile data against the project or coating-manufacturer requirement. Where different surface-profile methods are used on a project, the measurement method should be clearly identified in the inspection record rather than treating results from different methods as automatically interchangeable.
