Measurement of, and acceptance criteria for, the thickness of dry films on rough surfaces

WHAT DOES THIS STANDARD COVER?
Provides a procedure for measuring and assessing dry film thickness of protective coating systems on rough steel surfaces, including the treatment of surface roughness when comparing measurements with nominal dry film thickness.
WHY IS IT RELEVANT?
Frequently relevant when verifying coating thickness on abrasive blast-cleaned structural steel. Inspectors need to understand the measurement procedure, instrument adjustment and treatment of surface roughness before interpreting DFT results.
KEY INSPECTION CONSIDERATIONS
Dry film thickness measurements on abrasive blast-cleaned steel are influenced by the roughness of the substrate. ISO 19840 provides a structured approach for verifying dry film thickness against nominal dry film thickness on rough surfaces. Where the ISO 8503-1 surface-profile classification is being used, the associated correction values are: Fine: 10 µm Medium: 25 µm Coarse: 40 µm These values are corrections applied to account for the influence of the roughened substrate on the instrument reading. They are not measurements of the actual surface-profile height. The correction is applied when deriving the individual dry film thickness from the instrument reading. The standard is applicable where the nominal dry film thickness is 40 µm or greater. Inspectors should establish the applicable measurement and correction approach before interpreting DFT readings and should also consider the project specification and coating-system requirements.
WHAT THE STANDARD SHOULD NOT BE USED TO ASSUME
The Fine 10 µm, Medium 25 µm and Coarse 40 µm values are correction values. They should not be reported as measured blast-profile values. A DFT gauge reading taken directly from a rough steel surface should not automatically be treated as the individual dry film thickness without considering the applicable measurement procedure and surface-roughness correction. Compliance with a specified dry film thickness does not by itself demonstrate that the coating system has been correctly applied or that all other coating-quality requirements have been achieved. Project specifications may establish additional or different inspection requirements and should always be reviewed alongside the applicable standard.
PRACTICAL INSPECTION APPLICATION
ISO 19840 is particularly relevant during inspection of protective coating systems applied to abrasive blast-cleaned structural steel. Typical inspection activities include establishing the inspection area, taking the required DFT measurements, applying the appropriate roughness correction where applicable, interpreting individual and mean dry film thickness values and assessing the results against the specified nominal dry film thickness and applicable acceptance requirements. Surface-profile information should be considered alongside the DFT inspection process where relevant.
