WHAT DOES THIS STANDARD COVER?

Specifies a cross-cut method for assessing the resistance of a coating to separation when a lattice pattern is cut through the coating.

WHY IS IT RELEVANT?

Useful for comparative assessment of coating behaviour in appropriate coating/substrate configurations. This procedure is not a means of measuring adhesion; do not express results as tensile strength or convert classifications into MPa or psi.

KEY INSPECTION CONSIDERATIONS

ISO 2409 provides a cross-cut test for assessing the resistance of a coating to separation from the substrate or from another coating layer when a lattice pattern is cut through the coating. The result is determined by examining the behaviour of the coating around the cuts and assigning the applicable classification. The test can be used as a pass/fail assessment or as a classification test where appropriate. The coating thickness, substrate, condition of the coating, cutting tool and execution of the test can influence the result and should be considered when selecting and performing the test. ISO 2409 is not a method for measuring tensile adhesion strength.

WHAT THE STANDARD SHOULD NOT BE USED TO ASSUME

An ISO 2409 classification should not be converted into MPa, psi or another tensile adhesion value. The cross-cut test and pull-off adhesion testing measure coating behaviour using fundamentally different test approaches and their results are not interchangeable. ISO 2409 is not suitable for every coating system. In particular, coating thickness and surface texture can affect whether the method is applicable. A satisfactory cross-cut classification does not by itself demonstrate the overall performance or expected service life of a protective coating system. Project acceptance requirements should be established by the specification, coating manufacturer or other controlling documentation.

PRACTICAL INSPECTION APPLICATION

ISO 2409 may be used during coating inspection where a classified cross-cut assessment of coating behaviour is required. Before testing, the inspector should establish whether the method is appropriate for the coating thickness, substrate and coating system. The test location, coating condition, test method and resulting classification should be clearly documented. Where quantitative pull-off behaviour is required, ISO 4624 or another specified pull-off test method should be considered instead.

RELATED PIL GUIDANCE

ASTM D4541 and ASTM D3359 are both widely referenced when assessing coating adhesion, but they evaluate coating performance in fundamentally different ways. Understanding those differences is important when selecting an appropriate test method, particularly for high-build protective coating systems.
