Standard Test Methods for Rating Adhesion by Tape Test

ASTM International

Current

WHAT DOES THIS STANDARD COVER?

Provides tape-test methods for rating adhesion of coating films to metallic substrates using cuts made through the coating.

WHY IS IT RELEVANT?

Commonly encountered for adhesion assessment of coating films, but method selection needs to consider coating thickness, coating characteristics and the purpose of the test.

KEY INSPECTION CONSIDERATIONS

ASTM D3359 provides tape-test methods for rating adhesion of relatively ductile coatings on metallic substrates. The coating is cut in a defined manner, pressure-sensitive tape is applied and removed, and the affected coating area is visually rated using the applicable classification system. The standard contains different test approaches depending on coating thickness and test configuration. Test Method A is primarily intended for coating systems greater than 125 µm total thickness. Test Method B is primarily intended for coating systems less than 125 µm total thickness. For films above 125 µm, Method B is not considered suitable unless wider-spaced cuts are used and this has been explicitly agreed between the relevant parties.

WHAT THE STANDARD SHOULD NOT BE USED TO ASSUME

ASTM D3359 provides an adhesion classification or rating. It does not measure tensile pull-off strength. ASTM D3359 ratings must not be converted into MPa, psi or another tensile adhesion value. ASTM D3359 and ASTM D4541 measure coating behaviour using fundamentally different test approaches and their results should not be treated as interchangeable. The test also does not establish one universal project acceptance rating. Acceptance should be defined by the applicable project or coating-system requirement.

PRACTICAL INSPECTION APPLICATION

ASTM D3359 may be useful where a qualitative or classified assessment of coating adhesion by tape testing is required. The inspector should establish which test method is applicable to the coating system and thickness before testing. The test area, cut pattern, tape-test result and resulting classification should be clearly documented. Where a quantitative tensile adhesion value is required, a pull-off method such as ASTM D4541 may be more appropriate, subject to the project requirements.

RELATED PIL GUIDANCE

ASTM D4541 and ASTM D3359 are both widely referenced when assessing coating adhesion, but they evaluate coating performance in fundamentally different ways. Understanding those differences is important when selecting an appropriate test method, particularly for high-build protective coating systems.
