TECHNICAL STANDARD
ISO 11126-4
Preparation of steel substrates before application of paints and related products — Specifications for non-metallic blast-cleaning abrasives — Part 4: Coal furnace slag
ISO
Edition 2 / 2018
Current
WHAT DOES THIS STANDARD COVER?
Specifies requirements for coal furnace slag supplied as a non-metallic abrasive for blast-cleaning.
WHY IS IT RELEVANT?
Relevant where coal furnace slag is specified and abrasive properties form part of surface-preparation inspection or quality control. Requirements relate to abrasive supplied in the new condition.
KEY INSPECTION CONSIDERATIONS
The standard addresses requirements for coal furnace slag supplied as a new non-metallic blast-cleaning abrasive. Abrasive grading, physical characteristics and potential soluble contamination can be relevant to blasting performance and prepared-surface quality. The abrasive should be considered in its supplied condition and in relation to the required blasting process and prepared surface.
WHAT THE STANDARD SHOULD NOT BE USED TO ASSUME
Compliance of the abrasive with its specification does not itself demonstrate that the prepared steel has achieved the required visual cleanliness, surface profile or surface salt condition. Requirements applying to new abrasive should not automatically be assumed to describe abrasive condition after contaminated storage, handling or use.
PRACTICAL INSPECTION APPLICATION
Inspectors can review abrasive identification, supporting documentation and storage condition and consider specified abrasive tests where required. The resulting prepared surface should then be inspected independently against the project's visual cleanliness, surface profile and contamination requirements.
