TECHNICAL STANDARD
ISO 11124-2
Preparation of steel substrates before application of paints and related products — Specifications for metallic blast-cleaning abrasives — Part 2: Chilled-iron grit
ISO
Edition 2 / 2018
Current
WHAT DOES THIS STANDARD COVER?
Specifies requirements for chilled-iron grit supplied as a metallic abrasive for blast-cleaning.
WHY IS IT RELEVANT?
Relevant where chilled-iron grit is specified for abrasive blast-cleaning and abrasive characteristics form part of inspection or quality-control requirements. Requirements relate to abrasive supplied in the new condition and should not be represented as requirements for abrasive during or after use.
KEY INSPECTION CONSIDERATIONS
The standard addresses requirements for chilled-iron grit supplied as a new metallic blast-cleaning abrasive. Abrasive characteristics can influence blasting behaviour and the resulting prepared surface and surface profile. Inspection should consider the specified abrasive grade and available documentation together with the actual surface produced.
WHAT THE STANDARD SHOULD NOT BE USED TO ASSUME
Compliance of the abrasive with its material specification does not itself demonstrate that the prepared steel has achieved the required visual cleanliness or surface profile. Requirements for new abrasive should not automatically be applied to used or recycled abrasive without considering the applicable requirements for its condition and reuse. Abrasive suitability and prepared-surface acceptance remain separate considerations.
PRACTICAL INSPECTION APPLICATION
Inspectors can review abrasive type, grade and supporting documentation where specified and then separately inspect the resulting steel surface for the required visual condition, surface profile and other project requirements. Where abrasive is recovered or recycled, the applicable requirements for its continuing condition should be considered separately.
