WHAT DOES THIS STANDARD COVER?
Provides a standard method for qualification of coating applicators to demonstrate their ability to apply specified coatings to steel surfaces using appropriate equipment and techniques.
WHY IS IT RELEVANT?
Relevant where a project specification requires evidence of applicator proficiency or qualification before coating work proceeds. Do not imply that this standard is a universal mandatory qualification for all coating applicators or all projects.
KEY INSPECTION CONSIDERATIONS
The practice addresses qualification of coating applicators applying coatings to steel surfaces. Applicator qualification can demonstrate an individual's ability to carry out specified coating work under the qualification conditions. Qualification of the applicator is separate from inspection and acceptance of completed production work.
WHAT THE STANDARD SHOULD NOT BE USED TO ASSUME
Applicator qualification does not guarantee that all subsequent coating work will be satisfactory. Production quality can still be influenced by substrate condition, coating materials, equipment, environmental conditions and workmanship. Qualification should not be treated as a substitute for inspection of the actual work.
PRACTICAL INSPECTION APPLICATION
Where applicator qualification is specified, inspectors can verify appropriate qualification records or witness qualification activities where required. Production coating work should continue to be inspected against the applicable project specification, coating system requirements and inspection plan.
