BRIDGES & STRUCTURES
Historical case study, 2017. Paint Inspection Ltd carried out an initial coating survey of Tyne Bridge for Newcastle City Council as part of longer-term maintenance planning.
THE PROJECT
The 2017 scope was designed to build a practical condition picture of Tyne Bridge. Aerial reconnaissance established the wider structure and helped identify areas requiring closer investigation, including towers and confined spaces.
OUR INVOLVEMENT
Five drone flights were completed in one day to provide an overview of the structure and focus attention on priority areas. Laser mapping was used for the towers and confined spaces. Four inspectors then used large MEWPs, under traffic-management arrangements, to undertake close visual inspections.
TECHNICAL APPROACH
Close inspection included hazardous-material sampling, dry film thickness measurement, coating identification and adhesion testing. These activities followed the initial survey stage so that access and inspection effort could be directed to the relevant areas.
